Champions Science Adventures Summer Camps Deliver Fun Exploration and Discovery
Hands-On Science Camps Allow Kids to Build a Robot, Become Mini-Astronauts, Solve an Egyptian Mystery and Leap into a Wild Animal Adventure
Denver, CO (January 21, 2010) – Beginning today, parents can now enroll their K-6 grade children in Champions® Science Adventures® summer camps. Science Adventures summer day camps focus on taking science education beyond the classroom to spark a child’s interest in the world of science through exploration and discovery. This year, two new exciting camps have been added, including: Mystery of the Pharaoh’s Treasure and Go Wild! In these camps, children help to solve an Egyptian mystery and investigate amazing wildlife and plants. Plus, two popular camps - Gizmo’s Robot Factory and Space and Rocketry – return.
“Summer is one of the most exciting seasons for children to explore the world around us,” said Andy Allan, Director of Curriculum for Science Adventures, also known as Andy the Science Wiz. “Science Adventures camps are designed to inspire curiosity about how the world works while instilling a love of learning about science through interactive, hands-on experiments and activities. For example, our campers will not only learn about space and rocketry, they will be awed by building and launching their own water-propelled rockets.”
Science Adventures camps are available for students ages 5 to 12 years throughout the summer, at participating recreation facilities, parks, and schools nationwide. Children must have completed Kindergarten to enroll. Each day camp focuses on all aspects of science education to help spark a child’s interest in the world around them. The 2010 summer camps incorporate hands-on, innovative lessons developed for individual discovery and fun, educational enrichment.
Each year, the program’s camp curriculum is developed by top education experts. Camps are led by professionally trained and dedicated instructors in small groups by age level, during which each camper completes their own projects, “The activities we develop are intended to get children out of the house and to have fun while learning,” said Allan. “Many of the principles they learn during the summer can easily be applied during the school year.”
Each camp is one-week long with half-day and full-day options. Parents can enroll online at http://www.scienceadventures.com and have the option to register their children for all four camps, or just one program. Day camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for half-day. Camp program fees and schedules vary by location.
Campers also have access to Champions Science Adventures exclusive online science club, Kid Zone. Kid Zone is an interactive members-only Web site that features at home science experiments, fun science facts, a downloadable membership card, science games, contests and prizes.
This year’s camps begin in June and are organized into four hands-on science camps that focus on a new and interactive topic each week including:
Gizmo’s Robot Factory: Have you ever wanted to build a walking robot? Now is your chance. Back by popular demand... one of Gizmo’s greatest inventions, the Buggy-Bot! Build a giant insect motorized walking K’nex robot. Investigate what makes a robot tick as we take a robot’seye view in 3-D, listen with electronic ears, and prepare to compete in the Robo-Olympics. Stay all day and build a robot model with 5 robot technologies, create a crazy invention, and discover how robots are changing the face of our world. Power up for fun and discover the secret lives of these extreme machines.
Space and Rocketry: During this week, children transform into mini-astronauts through space exploration! Campers join Gizmo to build his brand new, state-of-the-art hydro-rocket by using the power of air pressure and water, to launch their very own rocket over 100 feet into the air. Campers can bring a bottle from home to design and launch a personalized rocket. Then, they take a trip around the universe by building a light-up solar system and a model of their galactic address. After flying high, students build their own motorized K'Nex Lunar Rover and make craters with marble meteorites!
Mystery of the Pharaoh’s Treasure: Campers journey to the land of the pharaohs to help Gizmo solve an Egyptian mystery and unearth two long-forgotten treasures! Decipher hieroglyphics, investigate the secret of the sands, predict the rising of the stars to unearth a mummy, and take home a share of the gold. Full-day campers become geologists and build a take home rock collection as they help Gizabelle solve the riddle of the Sphinx and reveal a crystal treasure. Take a step back in time to unravel this mysterious Egyptian adventure!
Go Wild!: Children leap into a wild adventure to investigate extreme plants and amazing animals. Campers join Gizabelle to build a nature kit complete with microscope, bug cage and telescope. Then meet live animals face-to-face during the amazing Animal Encounter! Those who stay a full day take part in the animal Olympics and make glowing fire flies, sticky octopus arms and more. Get ready to explore the world outside your door—it’s time to Go Wild!
